There are still some doubts as to the identification of this species in Sri Lanka. It has been previously believed that only Danio malabaricus existed in Sri Lanka. Known only from one collection from the Mahaweli Basin, eastern slopes of Knuckles hills (Ref. 11966). Siltation due to gem mining poses threat to the fish population (Ref. 11966). Also Ref. 43638.
